  1. I'm exhausted with details of Venice, the weather, the various types of boat. Very quickly it's clear that Venice and its weather are as much characters in this novel as the people. The first couple of pages in which Amedea waits for the storm to arrive are very atmospheric and so I thought the book had promise. After wading through much, much more of the same and being dragged into the meaningless lives of the characters, I decided that life is too short for such pretentious twaddle.
