    1. Warm, slow, modern-day folk tales that are rich with culture and quite relatable, regardless your heritage. I wasn't sure what to expect when I started this collection of stories. But when I reached the end, I felt I had been witness to something intimate and special. Each story stands well by itself. And in each story, one can literally feel the people you meet and - especially so - the environment in which they live. The treat, the unexpected gem, is that the stories connected and Mr. Mendez' [...]

    2. This story was very good. The writer's voice was heard loud and clear with a wonderful hint of El Paso. The struggle to achieve the American Dream comes with heart ache, not understanding, making do and still a need and desire to have more. The voice is flowing with a primitiveness and yet very much full of emotion that we all can relate to.I received this book via good reads and enjoyed the reading and am happy to add it to my library and share among others.

I was delighted to receive this book from Giveaway!The author, Matt Mendez, has developed characters and settings with a collection of interesting stories in revealing the human conditions that emerge out of the gritty and working-class barrios of El Paso, bring the reader deep into their world. I would recommend this book.

    4. Beautiful work. An instant favorite. It stands alone, like the last saguaro in the world or an ángel sucio.
