Blue jays, goldfinches, cardinals, mockingbirds, and even woodpeckers are among the songsters who disapprove of his raspy, cawing voice, but to his papa, his little bird's song is pure heaven. LOVED IT AND SO DID MY GRANDSON!Song for Papa Crowhas a gentle and precious morale lingering behind each superbly-done, glossy page, as all good stories should.I read it to my grandson, Matthew, before bedtime, and with the bedside lamp catching each colorful reflection of the many birds, along with the exquisite textures of the trees in a wildly imaginative forest, he became mesmerized.Together, we mimicked the calls of the birds and he particularly loved the caw of the crow [...]

    5. What a lovely book! Here is beautifully illustrated story about being true to who you are. 7. This author-illustrator has written a lovely, original story with subtle messages about the importance of being true to oneself and the power of a father's love. An additional plus is that young readers/listeners will learn some interesting facts about birds. The cut-paper illustrations are gorgeous!

    8. Wonderful story, very beautifully illustrated. A book that will touch people's hearts and leave the reader with a message that is not didactic or 'preachy,' but heart warming. A very special book that could become a classic.

    10. This book was excellent. When I was a child, I remember liking this one particular story written about crows and when I had a chance to read this book, I didn't want to miss it.Song for papa crow by Marit Menzin is about a little crow who wishes it could sing beautifully like all the song birds. No matter how hard it tries, the other birds laugh at him. His papa is the only one who convinces him that he is a good singer and encourages him to sing further more.Once his papa crow gets them tickets [...]

    11. Song for Papa CrowMarit MenzinSome songs are meant to be unique, with no melody and not sweet. Some songs are distinctive of who you are and not what others want you to be. Children all want to be part of a group and popular. Children want to be accepted, loved and cared for by their family and their friends. But, what happens when one trait that you have stands out above the rest and makes you different? What happens when that one trait almost costs you your life?Little Crow is a special young [...]

    12. The story of this book about Little Crow is delightful and refreshing. Little Crow is among a diverse group of many other types of birds who look and sing so much more beautifully than he can. He is upset over this and tries to fit in with the other birds by learning how to sing like them. This leads to danger for Little Crow when a great big Hawk comes along and grabs him. Papa Crow, who loves Little Crow so much does not know Little Crow is in danger because he cannot recognize Little Crow's o [...]

    15. Little Crow is desperate to have someone to play with. But when he tries to sing along with the other birds, all of which have beautiful voices, he is made fun of because of his ugly ‘caw’ sound. Then a mockingbird comes to town and gives a concert. Little crow is so impressed with his singing he persuades Papa Crow to take him ‘backstage’ for an autograph. Mockingbird gives Little Crow a seed which enables him to sing like the other birds. This, however, has its own consequences.Written [...]

    17. I really loved this book, it was short and sweet. The sounds of the birds were well written and the artwork matched the species rather accurately. It was a great story that has a wonderful moral about accepting yourself and being proud of who you are instead of trying to be someone or something you are not. I think that all kids need to know that they are perfect just the way they are and this book is a great way to educate about wildlife and bird sounds as well as teach confidence and pride in [...]

    18. In a multi-layered story featuring a juvenile crow, readers will learn about being true to oneself, as well as some natural facts about birds and the different songs they sing. "Song for Papa Crow," written and illustrated by Marit Menzin, is a colorful picture book written for children ages 3 and up.The illustrations of this children's picture book are done in collage of beautifully colored mulberry paper, marbled paper and other textured papers. Each bird comes to life with this technique and [...]

    19. This book was rather sweet. I enjoyed the graphics for the most part they were colorful and eye catching. I didn’t like the font in which the story was displayed though. The font to me was a bit much for a children’s book and was verging close to a cursive type writing which most small children do not know how to read. I liked that the moral of the story was that it’s okay to be who you are born to be and that you don’t have to change things about yourself just so that others will accept [...]

    20. Song for Papa Crow is a charming tale, written and illustrated by Marit Menzin for young children. The birds with their own particular and unique vocalizations come alive in the story. Blue jays, goldfinches, cardinals, mockingbirds, and woodpeckers are among the many songsters who enliven the adventure which awaits Little Crow. The fantasy has a moral to share in which it is important to be exactly as you were meant to be and not to try to be something you are not or trouble could ensue. The dr [...]

    21. I love the collage art in this book, and the message that one doesn't have to change one's voice to please others comes through loud and clear. The other birds don't like the way Little Crow sings. Papa Crow loves Little Crow's distinctive call because it helps him find his little one. Little Crow gets a seed from Mockingbird that allows him to sing like the other birds. Suddenly Little Crow is a hit with his friends, but Papa Crow doesn't recognize his child's voice when Little Crow calls for he [...]

    22. Review originally posted at Bettering Me Up.I thought this book had a lot of potential, but the kids didn't seem to like it.They enjoyed the sounds of different birds, but they got bored halfway through. I powered on, even though I had lost my audience. Even The Husband was distracted. The illustrations are beautiful, the moral of the story is perfect, and it was fun to make the bird calls. It's really too bad the kids weren't interested.I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange f [...]

    23. I received this book from Net-Galley for my honest opinion. I have to say I enjoyed this book. It is a book of self-discovery and teaching an important lesson, To always be true to yourself and who you are. This lesson is very important in today's world where everyone is trying so hard to fit in and be the same.In this book little crow feels bad because he can't sing as pretty as the other birds. He soon learns that his sound is unique for a reason. The graphics are beautiful and we get to learn [...]

    24. Little crow wants to be excepted by the other birds in the tree. When he comes across the chance to be able to sing like the other birds he takes it. Only trouble is that his family of crows can't hear him singing anymore because he is busy trying to be other birds. Little crow is happily singing another birds song when mr. hawk swoops down thinking he is getting a different bird and scoops up little crow. This is a good book for children to see how important it is to be yourself and not try to [...]

For more of my reviews visit herebirchbarkreviews/Rating: 3 birch leaves out of 5Recommends: Children ages 5 to 6Song for Papa Crow was a good way to tell children they are perfect just the way they are. Unfortunately it would have been a more enjoyable read if the whole book was in verse. The big issue I had with this was the font of the words. They were thin and barely legible which made reading difficult. But all in all a good choice to read to your children.

    26. With lovely illustrations, I love how the crow loves to sing. Yet an even a deeper message is that singing is good for the soul, with others or alone, just be true to your own inner voice. Touches on the importance of how trusting mentors can bring us out into the world with the confidence to venture on our own journeys.Marit Menzin is a talented artist. An informative guide on different birds will keep young ones interested in this story for a long time.

    27. When I first saw this picture book, I was struck by the gorgeous collage illustrations. The layered artwork reflecting nature is so beautiful. Marit Menzin has an amazing gift for colors and textures. Then, when I read the story, I was impressed by that, as well. Song for Papa Crow is an important timeless tale about being true to one’s own special uniqueness. Learning about the different birds and their individual songs is an added bonus. Highly recommended!

    28. I received an electronic copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. (full review can be viewed here: destinydawnlong.wordpress/)In final analysis, I give the book 2 out of 5 stars. It was okay. It had a strong concept and some excellent ideas. Unfortunately, I felt that the execution left a lot to be desired.

    29. We adore this book. In the last week we have read it about twice a day, upon kiddo's request. She likes mimicking the birds' songs as well as admiring all of Menzin's gorgeous collages. Read my full review, including commentary from my three year old, here: anakalianwhims.wordpress/2
