    1. The Breaker Boys by Par Hughes is a historical fiction book about a group of miner's sons and a rich boy who is the grandson/son of the owners of the mine.It is told from the point of view of Nate Tanner (the rich boy) who is lonely and temperamental. Nate lives in Hazelton, Pennsylvania in 1897, and the book is about the summer leading up to the infamous Lattimer Massacre of 1897.The book tells the story very neutrally, because Nate doesn't know who to believe, the miner's story or his father a [...]

    2. Nate is keeping a secret. His friends don’t know and that’s why he has some friends. His family doesn’t know about his friends. And now he knows a new secret that could destroy his father’s coal mining company.

    3. The Breaker Boys by Pat Hughes is a realistic fiction novel about the life of Nate Tanner, a rich boy, who lives in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania. Even though Nate lives in the lap of luxury, he is unhappy, because he has no friends. Nate’s problems starts when his mom dies, and he is sent away to boarding school. Always in trouble, Nate is kicked out and returns home even lonelier. But his life changes when Nate meets Johnny, a Polish boy, that works in a coal breaker, and they become be [...]

    4. One of my favorite historical fiction books.-------Expelled from school, Nate Tanner has no friends to leave behind and doesn’t expect to find any friends when he arrives home in disgrace. Even his father seems to be against him. Then Nate meets Johnny. Johnny and his family work in the coal mine Nate’s family owns. An unlikely friendship springs up between the two boys, but Nate doesn’t dare reveal his true identity. When Johnny finally finds out, Nate fears their friendship is over for g [...]

    5. This book had promise, but fell a little flat for me. The main character, Nate, is the middle son of a wealthy mine owner. He is a troubled young man who has a hard time making friends and is frustrated with the world until he befriends the "breaker boys," or young immigrant boys who sort the coal from the slate at his family's mine. He learns how frightening working conditions are for them, and finds himself conflicted when they begin to unionize and his grandfather resolutely decides to disreg [...]

    6. I think this book is very good because the setting and plot is perfect. It takes place in a city in the United States where one side of town is where the rich live and the other side is where the foreign miners live. This story talks about a boy named Nathan who comes from an extremely rich background. His family is the owner of a very successful coal mine. However, Nathan is different and wants to move away from such a boring rich life style. This is when he meets a miner boy named Johnny. John [...]

    7. I absolutely loved this book. I have never really been into historical fiction, but I think I will definitely look into more books like this one. I liked that even with the whole world against them, the boys still managed to make their friendship work. I hope to one day teach my students that social class shouldn't matter, even if your father owns the company. Everyone has a different story and I really liked how Pat Hughes showed the difference in the boys lifestyles but how they really weren't [...]

    8. The book The Breaker Boys is about a student who is expelled from school so he goes home. He gets a bike and on his ride he meets a boy who he becomes friends with and with the breaker boys. My favorite characters are Nate and Johnny. Who are the main characters of the book. I would recommend this book because it is an amazing life story about a boy named Nate. Nate is a strong boy but he could be emotional. Hes been very emotional since someone very important in his life is gone. I like this bo [...]

    9. The book made me sad that kids, especially immigrant children, have had to (and in many places around the world) perform such dangerous, physically work.

    10. This was a good book I really learned a lot a bout child labor laws and how the circuit breaker was invented.
